Lately, I’ve found myself deeply contemplating the role of AI in our education system. These thoughts have been shaped both by discussions with parents about their children’s use of such tools and by my own experiences with these platforms. In an attempt to better articulate the varying degrees of engagement with these technologies, I’ve coined two terms—though I admit they are informal and still evolving: Augmented AI and AI Immersive.

Augmented AI

In the Augmented AI approach, students employ tools like ChatGPT as a supportive aide. They might use it to gather information, develop an outline, or brainstorm ideas. However, the core activities of critical thinking and creative writing are primarily student-led, with the AI merely enhancing their process.

Pros:

2. Support: It offers an alternative avenue for explanations, especially beneficial for students grappling with tricky topics.

Cons:

1. Over-reliance: The convenience might tempt students to bypass deep thinking, seeking quick answers instead.
2. Loss of Originality: If students overly depend on the AI’s outputs, their creations may lose personal flair or fresh perspectives.

AI Immersive

With the AI Immersive approach, students lean significantly on ChatGPT, allowing it to handle not just research but also content creation and organisation. Here, the AI isn’t just an assistant; it becomes a primary contributor.

Pros:

1. Ease: Assignments can be completed with minimal personal effort, potentially useful during crunch times.
2. High-Quality Outputs: With ChatGPT’s capabilities, content generated can be coherent, structured, and grammatically accurate.

Cons:

1. Stunted Development: By outsourcing core tasks, students may fail to hone essential academic and life skills.
2. Ethical Implications: Relying on AI for academic content creation brings up issues of authenticity and the true essence of learning.

My reflections lead me to believe that the value of AI in education is greatly influenced by its mode of application. Augmented AI can be an enriching addition, empowering students to produce superior work and understand deeper. On the other hand, an AI Immersive approach might inadvertently curtail personal and academic development.

It’s crucial for educators, parents, and especially students to recognise these nuances. As we venture further into the technological era, it’s paramount to remember that the heart of education is personal growth, comprehension, and skill mastery. Tools like ChatGPT should amplify this journey, not supplant it.
